Talk about money BEFORE marriage

New York Times columnist Ron Lieber writes about the four money issues couples ought to discuss before getting married to determine compatibility and hopefully increase the odds of a successful partnership. Lieber urges couples to discuss their financial ancestry, credit history, financial control issues, and desired level of affluence.  Given the challenges many couples face over finances, premarital counselors should definitely add these topics to their agendas.

Such a well written article. I particularly liked this very succinct summary of the chance of a divorce for a specific marriage:
“The risk that any marriage will end in divorce is about 45 percent, according to David Popenoe, a professor of sociology emeritus at Rutgers University. The chances fall to about 40 percent for first marriages and decline further for college-educated couples, people from intact families and couples who share the same religion.”
